The Washington, DC Metrorail system is a regional rapid transit system consisting of five lines, 83 stations and approximately 103 miles of track. System completion as originally planned was achieved in 2001.
The system does not operate between the hours of Midnight and 6:00 AM - during these hours, trains and stations are swept and cleaned. A zoned fare system is used, with a ticket known as a ‘farecard‘ needed to enter and exit the system. Every station is handicapped-accessible, with special elevators leading all the way to the platform. There is a kiosk at every station entrance, where security personnel observe the station activity on television monitors. Cameras are strategically located throughout the stations; as a result, crime is extremely rare and graffiti is non-existent.
