Filomena Ristorante, located in historic Georgetown, has been a D.C. institution for 20 years, a favorite hangout of movie stars, diplomats, U.S. presidents – even foreign heads of state. They come to be seen – as well as to watch a bevy of Filomena’s Italian “mamas” make pasta from scratch. The restaurant features a peaceful garden atmosphere, with huge windows and lots of fresh flowers and antiques.
But the Italian cuisine is the real lure, and the dishes are irresistible. The pasta-rich menu is exhaustive, and features such appetizers as Scampi alla Zia Katie – three jumbo shrimp in scampi sauce. Salads include Insalata di Spinaci – fresh leaf spinach and red radicchio with roasted portabello mushrooms. Main courses are plentiful, highlighting such delights as Gnocchi della Mamma – potato-based dumplings tossed in Bolognese meat sauce. As an elegant touch, the restaurant offers complimentary sambucca and amaretto in crystal decanters to pour yourself, along with hand-crocheted lace place mats and desserts and bread baked on the premises.
On the way out, take home an “extra” dessert – perhaps a huge chocolate truffle or triple chocolate mousse.
