Opened April 2004, the Marian Koshland Science Museum
features state-of-the-art exhibitions targeted to the general public, bringing to
life the numerous studies conducted by the National Academies every year. As “advisers
to the nation on science, engineering and medicine,” studies conducted by the National
Academies greatly influence public policy decisions regarding science-related matters.
The mission of the Marian Koshland Science Museum is to make these studies more
accessible to the public and to increase public understanding of the nature and
value of science. The Marian Koshland Science Museum features state-of-the-art exhibits
that present the complexities of science in an engaging and accessible way to the
general public. Best enjoyed by visitors ages 13 and older, the museum explores
current scientific issues at the core of many of the nation’s public policy decisions,
as presented in reports by the National Academies. Interactive displays illustrates
the role of science in informing national policy and personal decisions regarding
controversial issues impacting people’s daily lives. A majority of the museum’s
exhibits are temporary and new exhibits will open approximately every two years.
