 Hillwood Museum and Gardens

Marjorie Merriweather Post, heiress to the C.W. Post-Toasties fortune and longtime grande-dame in Washington, DC‘s elite social circles was the owner of this home. This 25-acre estate and 40-room mansion was Post‘s final home in Washington. She made her home a museum of treasures she collected from around the world. The interior is grandly decorated with 18th- and 19th-century French furnishings and objects of art. Here you can see the finest collection of Russian decorative arts outside of Russia.

The estate, situated at the edge of Rock Creek Park, also features extensive gardens, including a formal French boxwood garden, an informal flower garden, and a Japanese garden with waterfall. The Japanese garden, designed by Shogo J. Jyaida, illustrates the art of displaying all the wonders of the natural landscape on a residential scale, with mountains, lakes, meadows, woods, and islands represented in miniature.

There is also a rose garden that surrounds Mrs. Post‘s grave. A display of Native American artifacts are housed in a building on the estate grounds.
