Freer
Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery Washington DC
Location: 1050 Independence Ave., Washington DC
The galleries are located on the National Mall, the grassy
area between the Capitol and the Washington Monument, steps from the Smithsonian
Metro stop. The two museums are connected by an underground exhibition space. Presented
by the Smithsonian Institution, these two galleries display predominantly Asian
artwork. The Sackler features temporary exhibits of Asian art, drawn from major
collectors around the globe. There is also a permanent collection of Chinese jades,
Iranian silver, and contemporary Japanese ceramics. The Freer Gallery shares space
between Asian works and 19th to 20th century American artists. The Peacock Room
is the only example of American James Whistler's interior designs.
