DC's US Botanic Garden
Location: 100 Maryland Avenue, SW, Washington, DC
Washington DC's United States Botanic Garden, situated
at the foot of the U.S. Capitol, welcomes thousands of visitors each year who stop
to stroll the gardens or visit the glass-enclosed Conservatory.
The exterior of the main structure, despite some additions
and minor changes, remains much as it was in 1800. The 2-acre outdoor area is a
spectacular place to walk and take some colorful photographs of native plants, including
a spectacular Rose Garden in season, while the Conservatory boasts indoor plants
from all around the world. Don't miss the newly-recreated "Jungle", with a walkway
that sits 24 feet above the floor so visitors can get the full effect of walking
through a jungle habitat.
There are a number of workshops held each week. While
the majority are for adults, the U.S. Botanic Garden staff is always sure to include
some fun hands-on activities for the kids. Families can stop at the Garden between
visits to the various museums and monuments to enjoy some peaceful downtime amidst
these glorious flowers and plants.
