Washington DC's Library of Congress in downtown Washington,
DC is the largest library in the world. It's collections, housed in 3 buildings
on Capitol Hill, include approximately 530 miles of bookshelves holding
more than 29 million books and other printed materials, 2.7 million recordings, 12 million
photographs, 4.8 million maps, and 58 million manuscripts.
The mission of the library is to "preserve a universal
collection of knowledge and creativity for future generations. "While sightseeing
families may not visit the library for the purpose of checking out a book, most
kids are awed
by the sheer size of the collections.
Thousands of staff members are on hand to answer your
family's questions about the library and to help you find your way around the buildings.
There's so much more to see that just the rows and rows of books that are part of
the Library of Congress. The library also hosts ongoing special exhibits on a number
of interesting subjects and even hosts concerts and other public events on a regular
basis, many that are family-oriented and kid-friendly.
