Earth Day Steel Drum Party

Location: Ripley Center, 1100 Jefferson Drive, SW, Washington, D.C.
Date: April 21-22

The Pan Masters know all about doing things to help the Earth. Come celebrate Earth Day with them with an eco-music celebration. Earth Day 2006 is being celebrated around the world with many different events – be sure not to miss this event at the Smithsonian.

Kids, do you like to play the drums? How about steel drums? Well, the Pan Masters are just that, masters of the steel drum, also known as the music of the islands.

Steel drums make beautiful music people of all ages can enjoy. And to join in the Earth Day festivities, the Pan Masters are creating this one-of-a-kind sound with recycled oil drums left after the second World War. How exciting!

Just imagine staying on a tropical beach, playing in the ocean and listening to the upbeat harmonious sounds of a steel drum. Now imagine how much better you feel knowing those drums are made from recycled parts. This is just one example of how to put recycled items to use.

Parents, just a warning – your kids may be so excited about recycling and finding creative ways to reuse household items, that you may have your own three-piece band when you get home. It is amazing to see what kinds of music can be made from old washboards, milk jugs and other common items.
