Kite Festival

Location: National Mall
Time: April 2, 10am-4pm, RAIN DATE: April 3

The 39th Annual Smithsonian Kite Festival is a Sky Fantasy. What an incredible visual - thousands of kites of different shape and construction coloring the DC’s sky.

The festival is one of the most popular annual events held on the National Mall and takes place during the National Cherry Blossom Festival.

This year’s festival features three competitions. For those who build their own kites, you are invited to enter the handmade kite competition. Teams may enter into two heart-stopping events this year.

The always popular traditional rokkaku kite battle will be held at the end of the day. And this year, we are excited to offer the first Smithsonian Hot Tricks Showdown competition. Kite flyers strut their stuff on the field while dazzling the crowd with trick kite moves. Awards are given in over 36 categories and a special award is given for the kite that best interprets our theme.

Representatives from kite organizations set up stunning displays under the open sky, where participants and spectators are invited to ask questions about kite making and kite flying. In addition to the competitions, there are demonstrations by kite-flying masters, free kite making for the kids and a kite exhibition.
