The Washington, DC Japanese Street Festival is preparing its 44th version of the Sakura Matsuri. This extremely popular event is attended by approximately 100,000 people making it the largest Japanese festival in the US. A celebration of spring as well as the deep friendship between the people of the US and Japan.

Some of the activities planned are as follows:

Performing Arts at the Sakura Matsuri brings professional and amateur musicians, dancers, vocalists and martial artists to the stage. Every year the festival welcomes performance groups from Japan and across the US. Performers are of all ages and cover both traditional and contemporary genres.

In 2005, the Matsuri will welcome one of Japan’s top 10 taiko groups from Tamagawa University. Their choreography and explosive sounds are not to be missed! Also on stage will be music celebrating Japan’s traditional sounds with koto and shamisen. Contemporary music will feature jazz to J-Pop. Throughout the festival grounds follow the crowds to the perennial favorite, Candyman.

Japanese hands-on arts and crafts are on site for everyone’s pleasure. Woodworking, hand-made Kimekomi dolls, washi paper and many more traditional arts will keep visitors entertained for hours.

The Children’s Corner offers an array of hands-on activities including origami, calligraphy, and traditional storytelling. For those interested in strategy, the ancient game of ""go"" can challenge even the most skillful player.

""The Taste of Japan"" is sure to please the palates and engage the eyes of all visitors as they see and taste the delicate and satisfying art of Japanese cuisine. And the kids are not forgotten. An interesting variety of sweets and rice crackers are especially created for their taste.
